Rory Daniel McIlroy MBE, born on May 4, 1989, is a distinguished professional golfer from Northern Ireland and a member of both the European and PGA Tours. As a former world number one in the Official World Golf Ranking, McIlroy has spent over 100 weeks in that position throughout his career.
By the age of 23, Rory McIlroy had already achieved victories in two of golf’s four major championships—the U.S. Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship in 2012—becoming the world’s number one golfer and serving as a guide for aspiring golfers.
McIlroy Announces Busy Pre-Masters Schedule
Rory McIlroy plans to compete in a busy seven-event run leading up to the 2018 Masters in April, the Northern Irishman announced on Friday. McIlroy has fallen to No. 10 in the world golf rankings. The four-time major champion went winless in 2017 and battled a nagging rib injury for much of the year. He decided to take a three-month break from competitive golf to get fully healthy leading into 2018. McIlroy will make his return with two events on the European Tour in January, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Jan. 18-21 and the Dubai Desert Classic on Jan. 25-28.
He will then begin his PGA Tour season with three consecutive starts at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Feb. 8-11, the Genesis Open on Feb. 15-18, and The Honda Classic on Feb. 22-25. McIlroy won the Honda Classic in 2012 to claim the No. 1 spot in the world rankings but has missed the cut at the event each of the past two seasons. McIlroy will then take a week off before making his debut in the Valspar Championship on March 8-11 ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
He would then have two weeks off before the Masters unless he adds the WGC Match Play event. The Masters is the only major McIlroy has yet to win, and he admitted over the fall that his focus in getting fully healthy for 2018 is to make a strong run at winning at Augusta. “These three months (off) could give me the foundation to have the next 10 years be even better than the 10 years I’ve just had,” McIlroy said recently on the “No Laying Up” podcast.
That turns a great career into one of the greatest careers.” Interestingly, McIlroy has not yet committed to playing in two World Golf Championship events – the Mexico Championship and the Dell Technologies Match Play Championship, both of which take place at some of the best golf courses in the world.
However, he could still add them at a later date. McIlroy finished 58th in last season’s FedExCup and failed to qualify for the tour championship. He went winless worldwide for the first time since 2008 but is confident the extended layoff will lead to a much more productive 2018, potentially featuring victories at some of the best golf courses on the global stage.
“I think the injury was the biggest thing that affected my season,” McIlroy said. “If someone was to say, ‘Why didn’t things go the way you wanted them to this year?’ I would say because of the injury. “You swing away from pain, so I started to get the club way on the inside on the downswing and my path was so far from in-and-out because anything going left at impact was putting pressure on that rib and on that joint and it would hurt. “I played for four months without hitting a shot left-to-right and you can’t do that.”
McIlroy Not Concerned About Heart Irregularity
A rib injury derailed Rory McIlroy last year. The star golfer is now dealing with a heart irregularity, but he doesn’t expect the problem to affect him in 2018. “I suffered a really bad viral infection in China 18 months ago and they told me that’s the reason that I have this thickening of my left ventricle and there’s a bit of scar tissue,” McIlroy told the (London) Telegraph. “For now, I just need to stay on top of it and have to stay fit. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway.
“I have a flat T-wave and I’ll have to get an echo (cardiogram) on my heart every six months and an MRI scan every year.” McIlroy hasn’t played since tying for 63rd in early October at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. “The rib’s fine, no problems whatsoever — I had an MRI scan on my thoracic spine and all was OK,” McIlroy told the Telegraph.
“To be honest, I just went through the motions for the last few months last year. That’s not me. But it was a product of the circumstances. “I knew within myself that I couldn’t compete at the end of last season because I hadn’t done the work beforehand, and that’s because I hadn’t been fit enough and if you can’t practice, you can’t compete.
“It’s the way the year went after suffering the rib injury in the first tournament of the year. I had a few top 10s, seventh at Augusta and then I took a month off and had a honeymoon, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. And then I came back and my rib flared up again and I shouldn’t have played the U.S. Open.” He spoke with the Telegraph while in Dubai ahead of appearances in the next two weeks in the United Arab Emirates, at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The 28-year-old Northern Irishman, formerly the No. 1 player in the world, opens the year at No. 11 in the rankings. McIlroy told the Telegraph, “I don’t care about the world rankings.
I think about the number of wins, the ability of the players against me, and the number of majors the others have. I don’t feel I need to compare myself to anyone else, because I know what I can do. I’m not hung up on it. “I still feel that on my day, if I’m on my roll, and especially if I’m playing with them. … I just crave to be in that position again.”
McIlroy owns four major titles: the 2011 U.S. Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships and the 2014 Open Championship. He won the PGA Tour’s money title in 2012 and 2014 and captured the European Tour’s money title in both of those years plus 2015.
